Logistics has become a strategic factor for development and competition. Terrorist attacks, such as 11th of September 2001 in the USA, have caused the introduction of rules and procedures, which affect the overall logistics showing the vulnerability of the global economy. This book presents the status of research on dangerous goods transport.
Understanding and predicting the behaviour of natural and human environmental systems is crucial for the effective management of the Earth’s limited resources. Recently, great advances have been made through spatial modelling. This book provides a snapshot of the latest research in modelling technologies and methodologies within five environmental fields; the cryosphere, hydrology, geomorphology, vegetation interfaces and urban environments.Spatial Modelling of the Terrestrial Environment deals with the use of remote sensing, numerical models and GIS in addressing important natural and human environmental sciences issues, focusing on the theory and application of modelling remotely sensed data within the context of environmental processes. Extensive case material exemplifies the latest research and modelling paradigms presented in the book.

Water can be considered as one of the basic elements supporting life and the natural environment, a primary component for industry, a consumer item for humans and animals and a vector for domestic and industrial pollution. Various European Directives already provide a framework for the control of aquatic substances, the quality of bathing, surface and drinking water and effluent control. Such regulatory measures are closely related to analytical measurements. In order to comply with these regulations on a permanent basis, treatment plants and distribution companies, as well as water users and polluters, need to implement automated measuring techniques, such as sensors and other analytical tools in continuous or sequential mode to obtain suitable alarm systems and facilitate the management of water resources and decision making processes. This approach is in continuous evolution within the European Union. In view of the consequences of wrong measurements, it is vital that reliable quality control systems be achieved and maintained. At present, only a small range of analytical parameters can be measured automatically, it is therefore necessary to develop and validate new methods to extend the list of parameters. The development of new methodologies requires that the most recent know-how in fields such as optics, electrochemistry, biochemistry, chemometrics and others be shared by experts. In order to identify possible actions to be undertaken in the field of standards, measurements and testing for monitoring water quality, the Standards Measurements and Testing (SMT) Programme of the European Union, organised a European workshop that was held in Nancy 29-31 May 1997. This workshop bought together researchers and industrial users with the aim to make an overview of the present state-of-the-art, to consider possible improvements in existing techniques and the need and possibilities of developing new advanced technologies.

Value-at-Risk has emerged as the standard tool for measuring and reporting financial market risk. Currently, more than eighty commercial vendors offer enterprise or trading risk management systems that provide VAR-like measures. Risk managers are therefore often left with the daunting task of having to choose from this plethora of risk measures. While basic VAR textbooks describe average VAR situations, the vast majority of these situations are abnormal. Elements of Financial Risk Management focuses on implementation, especially recent techniques which facilitate "e;bridging the gap"e; between standard textbooks on risk and real-life risk management systems. This book will appeal to practitioners in the financial services and investment industries, as well as graduate students and advanced undergraduates who want exposure to these techniques.*Pinpoints key features of risk asset returns and captures them in tractable statistical models in theaccompanying CD-ROM*Presents step-by-step approaches as a means to solve problems*Visible patterns in the data motivate the choices of tools, and when tools fall short, it presents the next tool

From the Foreword by Rob Smith, Director of Estates and Facilities (NHS England), Department of Health‘The built environment for the delivery of Healthcare will continue to change as it responds to new technologies and modalities of care, different expectations and requirements of providers and consumers of care. It is vital that built environment students and practitioners alike avail themselves of the best possible information to guide them in their studies, continuing professional development and the delivery of their tasks. The range is enormous from the assessment of need, planning the service delivery to design, construction, commissioning, maintenance and operation of the healthcare environment. The book that follows addresses these areas from a blend of contributions of experienced practitioners to the descriptions of the output from recent research that moves forward the frontiers of knowledge and practice in the many areas of the healthcare built environment.I happily commend this book to all engaged in the exciting fields of planning, delivering, maintaining and operating healthcare environments. When we get it right, we are able to do immeasurable good.’This book helps academic researchers as well as practitioners to understand how the healthcare infrastructure sector works by addressing the crucial issue of healthcare delivery from a built environment perspective. It explains the trends in healthcare, models of healthcare delivery; healthcare planning; the NHS building and investment programmes; the procurement process; and facilities management; financial models – including PFI and LIFT; risk allocation and partnering.Past investigations in the area of healthcare delivery have concentrated on either the medical aspects or the design issues of buildings but Improving Healthcare through Built Environment Infrastructure is unique in considering the ‘meeting space’ of built environment technologies and modern methods of procurement with the medical and operational needs of he

The scope and applicability of risk management have expanded greatly over the past decade. Banks, corporations, and public agencies employ its new technologies both in their daily operations and long-term investments. It would be unimaginable today for a global bank to operate without such systems in place. Similarly, many areas of public management, from NASA to the Centers for Disease Control, have recast their programs using risk management strategies. It is particularly striking, therefore, that such thinking has failed to penetrate the field of national security policy. Venturing into uncharted waters, Managing Strategic Surprise brings together risk management experts and practitioners from different fields with internationally-recognized national security scholars to produce the first systematic inquiry into risk and its applications in national security. The contributors examine whether advance risk assessment and management techniques can be successfully applied to address contemporary national security challenges.

Most construction projects are large and costly. Collaborative working involves two or more stakeholders sharing their efforts and resources to complete the project more effectively and efficiently. Collaborative, integrative and multi-disciplinary teams can tackle the complex issues involved in creating a viable built environment. This tends to be looked at from three interrelated perspectives: the technological, organizational, and social; and of these the key issue is to improve productivity and enable innovation through the empowerment and motivation of people. This book provides insights for researchers and practitioners in the building and construction industry as well as graduate students, written by an international group of leading scholars and professionals into the potential use, development and limitations of current collaborative technologies and practices. Material is grouped into the themes of advanced technologies for collaborative working, virtual prototyping in design and construction, building information modelling, managing the collaborative processes, and human issues in collaborative working.
