Het Design Museum in Gent is al jarenlang een vaste partner van het Drents Museum. Er is dan ook alle reden de rijke collectie op het gebied van de Art Nouveau en Art Deco van het Gentse Museum nu eens in Assen te laten zien. De Belgische art nouveau vertoont enkele duidelijke eigen kenmerken, zoals het streven naar samenwerking met de industrie en aandacht voor het constructieve. Niet toevallig waren de vier pioniers van de Art Nouveau in België, Gustave Serrurier-Bovy, Paul Hankar, Victor Horta en Henry van de Velde, ook werkzaam als architect. Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog en de Wederopbouw slaagden Oscar Van de Voorde en Albert Van Huffel erin de sterke dominantie van de florale-decoratieve richting om te buigen naar een meer constructieve vorm van design. In Vlaanderen kwam de aansluiting bij vooruitstrevende buitenlandse stromingen pas in de late jaren ’20 en de vroege jaren ’30. Ontwerpers als Huib Hoste, Marcel-Louis Baugniet, Louis-Herman De Koninck en Gaston Eysselinck ontwikkelden, weliswaar heel kortstondig, een modernistische buismeubelproductie.
