Born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey, Vincent N. Parrillo experienced multiculturalism early as the son of a second-generation Italian American father and Irish/German American mother. He grew up in an ethnically diverse neighborhood, developing friendships and teenage romances with second- and third-generation Dutch, German, Italian, and Polish Americans. As he grew older, he developed other friendships that frequently crossed racial and religious lines. Professor Parrillo came to the field of sociology after first completing a bachelor's degree in business management and a master's degree in English. After teaching high school English and then serving as a college administrator, he took his first sociology course when he began doctoral studies at Rutgers University. Inspired by a discipline that scientifically investigates social issues, he changed his major and completed his degree in sociology. Leaving his administrative post but staying at William Paterson University, Prof. Parrillo has since taught sociology for more than 30 years. He has lectured throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe and has regularly conducted diversity leadership programs for the military and large corporations. His keynote address at a bilingual educators' conference was published in Vital Speeches of the Day, which normally contains only speeches by national political leaders and heads of corporations and organizations. Prof. Parrillo was a Fulbright Scholar in the Czech Republic and Scholar-in-Residence at the University of Pisa. He was the keynote speaker at international conferences in Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Sweden. He has met with government leaders, nongovernment agency leaders, law enforcement officials, and educators in more than a dozen countries as a consultant on immigration policy, hate crimes, and multicultural education. He has done on-air interviews with Radio Free Europe and Voice of America, appeared on national Canadian television, and been interviewed by numerous Can

In this innovative work, Alan Ward uses the pivotal event in twentieth-century Irish history as a prism through which to survey Irish history from the twelfth century to the present. By asking why the Easter Rising occurred, Ward is able to review the history of Anglo Irish relations, from the time of Norman settlement to World War I, as well as the development of several kinds of Irish nationalism in the nineteenth century. Then, by asking what the effects of the Rising have been, Ward discusses the Irish war of independence, the creation of the Irish Free State, and the Irish civil war, pondering the influence of the various strands of Irish nationalism on the modern state. Finally, the book reviews the conflict in Northern Ireland from the 1960s all the way to the fall of 2002, making this distinctive and analysis ideal for use as a core text in Irish history or superb supplementary reading for survey courses in British, European, and World History.

An exceptional man, George Mercer Dawson (1849-1901) a tiny hunchback, may have contributed more than any other person to early knowledge of the geology, biology and ethnology of Canada's Northwest. Possessed of a brilliant mind, boundless enthusiasm, an insatiable thirst for knowledge, and a great love of the land, he made some of the most epic exploratory journeys in Canadian history. His maps and reports remain invaluable reference sources. Both Dawson City and Dawson Creek are named in his honour. This book tells the story of some of his life experiences and adventures.
Jack Boudreau is back with another wild and woolly, scarcely believable but nevertheless true tale of misadventure in British Columbia's northern wilderness. Wild and Free, which Boudreau says is his best book yet, tells the stories of two of Canada's most legendary mountain men -- Skook Davidson (who actually has a mountain named after him) and Frank Cooke. In Wild and Free the fun rolls on for 240 pages as author Boudreau falls in with Davidson's long-time protege, Frank Cooke, (now 77) and together they reconstruct the old buzzard's memorable life.
Selkirk has been well observed through the eyes of the rich and powerful, but his settlers have been neglected. Why did they leave Scotland? Which districts did they come from? Why did they settle in Canada? Why did Selkirk help them? How successful were their settlements? What impact did they have on Canada's early development? Did Selkirk realise his ambitions for Canada? In answering these questions Lucille H Campey presents a new and powerful case for re-assessing the achievements of Selkirk and his settlers. Using a wealth of documentary sources she reconstructs the sequence of emigration from Scotland to the three areas of Canada where settlements were founded. She shows that emigration took place in a carefully planned and controlled way. She reveals the self-reliance, adaptability and steely determination of the Selkirk settlers in overcoming their many problems and obstacles. They brought their rich traditions of Scottish culture to Canada and, in doing so, helped to secure its distinctively Canadian future. Together, Selkirk and his settlers succeeded against overwhelming odds and altered the course of history.

Q. What does everyone want from a marriage? A. For someone else to be the wife! Exploring the many cultural assumptions exposed by divorce -- sex, money, dating, love, home, and health -- Splitting Up is both a guide to the new social landscape and a serious search for personal meaning in an age of rapidly shifting cultural values. According to social theorist and lawyer Larry G Frolick, divorce is neither a legal nor a therapeutic problem -- it is a serious cultural issue. No one can perform the old social roles anymore. Drawing on his most interesting cases from twenty years practicing law, and from studies in culture, the author shows how the seventy-per-cent divorce rate is the flip side of mall marriage -- that is, a relationship based on consumption, rather than on saving -- and how divorce is part of our common destiny, a painful world many of us will one day encounter. This fascinating book takes the reader on an unsettling trip into the strange world of divorce, revealing the new social order and the roles we must play in it to survive -- Working-Warrior Mom, Treat Daddy, and the Lost Child -- as our society evolves into the next millenium.Splitting Up is a hip handbook for divorce in the twenty-first century, a guide to survival and renewal.

Mapper of Mountains follows the career of Dominion Land Surveyor Morrison Parsons Bridgland, who provided the first detailed maps of many regions of the Canadian Rockies. Between 1902 and 1930, this unheralded alpinist perfected phototopographical techniques to compile a series of mountaintop photographs during summers of field work, and spent his winters collating them to provide the Canadian government and tourists and mountain climbers with accurate topographical maps. Bridgland was also a great climber and co-founder of the Alpine Club of Canada. Mapper of Mountains tells the story of the Rocky Mountain Repeat Photography Project, which studies the changes sustained in the Rockies, repeating the field work accomplished by Bridgland almost a century ago.

The membrane electrical potential is a central element in the functioning of all living cells, and temporal variations of this potential are crucial for signaling within the nervous systems of all animals. Electrical properties of nerve cells are covered in neurobiology courses, but because electrical concepts are complex and textbook illustrations are static, students often find neurophysiology intimidating and inaccessible. In order to make neurophysiology less formidable and more accessible, we developed a comprehensive approach that begins with the elements of electrical circuits. This approach is found in both this book and in NDX II, a modeling system that is available for free online and is largely platform independent. This book, together with its associated computer simulation lessons, teaches students about neurophysiological concepts, and then the online software further expands their knowledge through modeling experiments. These hands-on simulations serve to deepen students' understanding of basic neurophysiological techniques, including intracellular recording and voltage clamp.NDX II simulates the dynamic properties of neurons at several organizational levels: the membrane patch, neuronal compartments (dendrite, soma, neurite, and axon), individual neurons, and synaptic interactions within neuronal circuits (up to 100 neurons). NDX II models present experimental results dynamically, in the sense that the results are displayed as they are generated, providing a sense of experimental verisimilitude. Based on a user-friendly, highly accessible graphics interface, the models encourage active exploration of physiological properties through the manipulation of model parameters. NeuroDynamix II embodies a tight interdependence between didactic text and online software. Section I of the book provides explicit, illustrated introductions to electrical concepts, properties of ion channels, resting and action potentials, synaptic interactions, and neuronal circuits. Each didactic subsection concludes with detai

'The past six weeks have been incredible: we've eaten frogs, drunk beer on the street with locals in Vietnam, ridden a motorcycle through rice fields, explored the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat, and scuba dived the crystal clear waters off several tropical islands. The next six months will be just as interesting and just as much fun.' As incredible as this trip has been for Adam and Darcie, the most incredible part is that they haven't spent a penny on it. In fact, they have actually been making money. This will continue for the rest of their travels, for as long as they want. Adam and Darcie have written this book with the explicit intention of changing your life so that - when you've learnt their strategies -you, too, can start living the life you've always wanted. Adam and Darcie's websites - which they refer to as streamsA" throughout the book - are the reason they are able to live the way they do. They bring in more passive income each month than they spend, which results in copious amounts of free time and a never-ending stream of income to travel with. In this book you will discover: - how to set up your business so that it almost runs on auto pilot.- how you should plan your travels around the world. The book is divided into four parts: 1. Inspiration - a listing and photos of some of the most intriguing destinations around the world, along with photographs to get your imagination running. 2. Education - how to build an online business, from creating a product to accepting payments. 3. Perspiration - step-by-step accounts of three very different online business models to finance your dreams. 4. Embarkation - covers the nuts and bolts of long-term travel abroad.

Historically, the United States and Russia have had an enigmatic relationship, and the decade since the end of the Cold War has not completely cleared the ambiguity between the two nations. Russia itself faces several problem areas in its ongoing transition from communism and the old Soviet government to democratic society. Among Russia's quandaries are the war with Chechnyan separatists, organised crime, government corruption, arms control, the emergence of free markets, and international relations with NATO and the UN. The start of the American-led war on terrorism has brought Russia even more into focus as a key ally in opposing insurgency and militants. This book studies the wide array of dilemmas facing Russia both domestically and internationally.

Deals with crucial aspects of the theoretical foundations of systems biology, namely power law distributions and scale-free networks. This book not only describes the interesting mathematical properties of biological networks, but moves beyond phenomenology, towards models of evolution capable of explaining the emergence of these features.
In the battles over religion and politics in America, both liberals and conservatives often appeal to history to support their position. Liberals claim that the Founders separated church and state. But for much of American history, David Sehat writes, Protestant Christianity had an intimate connection with the state. Yet the past was not the Christian utopia that conservatives imagine either. Instead, a Protestant moral establishment prevailed, using government power to punish free thinkers and religious dissidents. In The Myth of American Religious Freedom, Sehat provides an eye-opening history of religion in public life, overturning our most cherished myths. Originally, the First Amendment applied only to the Federal government, which had limited authority. On the state level, the Protestant moral establishment ruled, using moral laws to uphold religious power that grew with time. After 1820, Sehat shows, new state constitutions increasingly invoked the deity, and even existing constitutions were rewritten with religious language. This moral and religious orthodoxy, Sehat argues, was enforced against Catholics, Jews, Mormons, agnostics, and others. Not until 1940 did the U.S.Supreme Court extend the First Amendment to the states. To trace the rise and fall of this Protestant establishment, Sehat focuses on a series of dissenters--abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton, socialist Eugene V. Debs, and many others. Shattering myths held by both the left and right, David Sehat forces us to rethink some of our most deeply-held beliefs. By showing the bad history used on both sides, he denies partisans a safe refuge with the Founders.
Exploring the distinction between "forced" and "free" prostitution, and documents the expanding international traffic in women. The author argues that: the sex of prostitution is not just sex; the work of prostitution is not ordinary work; and prostitution is a 'choice' not for the prostituted women, but for the men who abuse them.

Zimbabwe's prospects appeared promising in 1980, as it gained independence after a long liberation war. The country exhibited steady economic growth, enabling the new government to provide free education and widespread access to health care. Challenges grew in the 1990s, however. Rising inflation and unemployment bred discontent.
Canadians have always been obsessed with the idea of their own identities. Stories that tell us who we are provide a reassuring sense of identity for the individual and the nation. Hockey. Maple Leaves. Beavers. But collective stories tend to be haunted by a fear that a shared narrative might be nothing more than an elaborate artifice. This fear has long been a source of gothic inspiration for Canadian writers. A haunted Canadian self returns again and again. Polite. Friendly. Not American. With examples of gothic discourse from Canadian fiction, autobiography, film, poetry, and drama, Justin Edwards analyses the ghost at the heart of the nation. A major contribution to cultural and literary studies, Gothic Canada unearths two centuries of Canadian gothic writings to reveal uncanny traditions of trauma, repression, and monstrosity.
Argues that the secret of 'European-style' public transport lies in a generalizable model of network planning that has worked in places as diverse as rural Switzerland, the Brazilian city of Curitiba and the Canadian cities of Toronto and Vancouver.

Interest in UV disinfection has increased significantly in recent years, due its ability to inactivate Cryptosporidium parvum. Although UV disinfection shows significant promise for inactivation of Cryptosporidium, very few investigations have examined the impact of UV disinfection on biological stability in distribution systems. Biologically stable water is defined as drinking water that does not promote the growth of microorganisms and is typically achieved either through the removal of substrate and/or by providing a secondary disinfectant. At present there is little information concerning potential synergies between UV treatment and secondary disinfectants for improving biological stability. The overall objective of the research was to evaluate the effect that UV disinfection has on biofilm growth in drinking water distribution systems. In addition, the project's sub-objectives were to (1) determine the potential synergistic effects between primary disinfection with UV treatment and secondary disinfection for controlling bacterial regrowth; (2) compare the effectiveness of chlorine dioxide, free chlorine, and monochloramine for limiting bacterial regrowth in the presence and absence of UV treatment; (3) characterize the chemical intermediates formed during UV/CI2 photocatalysis of natural organic matter; and (4) examine the potential impact of UV/CI2 treatment on the biodegradability of natural organic matter (NOM) for three drinking water utilities. The research was conducted in three phases: Phase 1 provided a direct comparison of chlorine---based disinfectants following UV disinfection; Phase 2 examined the biodegradability of humic material that had been photocatalyzed with UVICI2; and Phase 3 characterized the organic by--products produced following UVICI2 catalysis of post-filtered water obtained from three water utilities. Phases 1 and 2 were conducted at bench-scale using annular reactors (ARs) to monitor bacterial regrowth.Phase 3 was conducted at bench-scale with a batch biodegradation study to monit
