For the designers operating under the name 75B the domain of the arts is an indispensable field of activity. They consider autonomous artistic research to be an inbuilt component of their practice. For them the field of the arts is the place to engage with the basics. No goal, no immediate perspective on possible applications, no client. The fundamentals of graphic design and those of the fine arts are so far apart that 75B has amassed an ambivalent body of work. This duality reveals itself in communicative work done for clients alongside experimental work done for themselves. The dichotomy of this practice gives it a contradictory and almost absurd demeanour and although their work is simple, immediate and lucid it is often at the same time ambiguous and two-pronged. In Arab Spring & Aaron Winter 75B puts the importance of the world of commissions into perspective. Leaving out the competition-winning house style designs and arresting logos, it focuses instead on the work given over to seeking, finding, failing. The dark side, the failures, imperfection - these are essential elements of their works.

The second volume in the Exchange Sessions between jazz drummer Steve Reid and electronic whiz Kieran Hebden is even more abstract than the first. Like its predecessor, it contains three cuts: all of them over 15 minutes in length. Given that there were no overdubs or edits of any kind, the pressure put on the players is fairly hefty. The level of abstraction here is very high. Even so, Reid is a centered drummer. He believes in and plays rhythms that are circular as a way of bringing a listener inside a track no matter how strange or dislocated it may seem initially. That is certainly the case on 'Hold Down the Rhythms, Hold Down the Machines.' At 20 minutes, it is the longest piece here, and the most cohesive. Reid's drumming keeps a constant pulse, amended by cymbals that gradually enter. Hebden begins to employ all manner of electronic bleeps, screes, washes, and machine sounds. Reid keeps it tethered, where backmasked electronic sounds enter cyclically and add to the base. Hebden then begins playing a moody series of ambient keyboard sounds that tonally match the tom toms. The piece picks up in intensity and detail with all manner of hell breaking loose while it stays -- for the most part -- centered. This is true of all three titles here, 'Noémie' is introduced by long ambiences and slippery cymbal work before it gathers steam and ends up in an entirely different sonic landscape. 'We Dream Free,' the most accessible of the three is trancelike -- and we are talking primitive, tribal -- not house style. Reid's a percussion shaman and he creates dynamic spaces inside his work that make Hebden stretch both frame and idea. The work would not have been out of place on a more skeletal version of My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. It may be true that for many, these two discs are too much of a good thing: for the rest who have been drawn in by Vol. 1 or Reid's Spirit Walk disc on Soul Jazz, they are compelling, curious, and satisfying. ~ Thom Jurek

Following a couple full-length albums and a move from Basque Country to Barcelona, Spain, Delorean reinvented themselves on the critically acclaimed Ayrton Senna EP (2009) and continue in that same direction on Subiza, a full-length effort with a wider range of stylistic approaches. Fronted by vocalist and bassist Ekhi Lopetegi, the quartet's alternative dance style draws from both indie pop and electronic dance music, Balearic house in particular. While reminiscent to indie favorites like Cut Copy and Air France, Delorean aren't really indie electronic in the same sense. The nine tracks comprising Subiza are full-on dance music influenced by the Barcelona techno scene and the Balearic style associated with Ibiza and other Mediterranean hot spots. In a way, Delorean are reviving the Balearic-influenced acid house style from 20 years ago, harking back to British alternative dance classics like New Order's Technique (1989) and Primal Scream's Screamadelica (1991). Delorean are far less grounded in rock, however, and they benefit greatly from modern-day technology. Their songs are densely layered and so drenched in synth, samples, and beats that one might be surprised to learn that Delorean are an actual band and not a one- or two-man production team. Though low in the mix, the vocals of Lopetegi are an integral layer of the music, as are the vocal samples that float around in the background. Take for instance the album-opening highlight 'Stay Close,' on which the vocals of Lopetegi don't begin until a full minute into the song. He doesn't sing a lot on this song nor on any of the others, but the vocals anchor the track melodically and give it something of a pop song structure. The chopped-up vocal samples ('hey, babe,' 'get up,' et al.) that drift in and out of the track are also important from a melodic standpoint. All of these vocals, be they proper or sampled, go a long way toward making Delorean more than just another dance act. Subiza is a dance album, make no mistake, but it's far from typical and it's blissful enough to be enjoyed at home in the midst of Beach House, Hot Chip, and LCD Soundsystem. ~ Jason Birchmeier

Canadian house duo Art Department -- longtime Toronto club scene veterans Jonny White and Kenny Glasgow -- made a massive splash in the dance music world with their 2010 debut single, 'Without You.' A mind-numbing slice of stark, minimal tech-house sporting a crushingly bleak, bleary-eyed vocal from Glasgow, sounding like he was on the brink of utter depravity, the track met with tremendous acclaim and, it's safe to say, ratcheted up considerable anticipation for the duo's debut album. And rightly so: The Drawing Board is a near-flawless work of deep, dark, moody modern house: an expansive, atmospheric odyssey equally primed for wee-hours dancefloors and late-night headphone sessions. (You could try listening to it during daylight hours too, but somehow that just seems perverse: this is, indisputably, nocturnal music.) In general, most of these tracks follow the basic template of 'Without You,' settling into a propulsive but deceptively low-key groove -- nothing too flashy, but complex enough to sustain interest and dynamism for anywhere from six to ten minutes -- and carefully layering on a few judicious melodic elements, allowing ample breathing space for each. There's a hypnotically squirmy synth riff on 'Much Too Much': ping-pong bass blips and gospel-touched organ stabs on 'We Call Love,' and 'Without You''s irresistibly sproingy robo-toms. From there it's all up to the vocals, frequently in Glasgow's deadpan croon, though it's not all anguish and devastation: 'We Call Love' drafts in soulful, deep house vet Osunlade to deliver a soul-searing plea for romantic guidance, while quasi-celeb DJ Seth Troxler turns up on 'Living the Life' to drop a motivational self-help sermon in classic Chicago house style, and then returns on 'Vampire Nightclub' to litter cornball utterances ('straight gangsta...') in and among Glasgow's woozy, creepily sinister dancefloor incantations ('I like to watch your body get down.') Art Department switch things up toward the end, trying out a brief R&B-flavored tune over a slow, shuffling breakbeat ('In the Mood'), a downtempo synth-reggae track ('Roberts Cry'), instrumental save for few wordless, hair-raising diva wails, and a jazzed-up sequel to stand-out 'Tell Me Why' boasting some tasty keyboard noodles. There's nothing wrong with these diversions, which don't disrupt the mood but rather augment it in fairly unexpected ways. But when Art Department stick with their signature sound, even though it might not be exactly unique -- it's easy enough to trace a lineage through seminal Chicago jack tracks, early-'90s disco house and the sleeker end of electro-clash to contemporary peers like Soul Clap and Benoit & Sergio -- the results are nothing short of mesmerizing. ~ K.
