Secondhand Sureshots is a fascinating CD/DVD combo pack documenting an ?experiment in creative sound recycling? held by the left-field hip-hop label Stones Throw in conjunction with the non-profit, internet radio station Dublab. Whichever five gems they found could be cut, looped, sliced, and diced into a new track, the results of which would be pressed on an acetate which would then be sneaked back into the thrift store?s inventory. The film part of Sureshots isn?t so much about that subversive final act as it is the creative process. The four producers give insight into their crate-crawling selection process, which is mostly judging a book by its cover, but occasionally the traditional music business junkie stuff comes out, like when J-Rocc offers funk heads the expert advice of ?Don?t buy anything on Concord.? There?s also an amusing bit about how L.A. thrift stores are absolutely bursting with discarded Barbra Streisand records, and the four subjects are a pleasure to hang with, each being as witty and open as you?d expect. The end results are all different, all astounding, and all available on the accompanying CD, which adds a megamix by Kutmah along with some other odds and ends. In the late 1960s and early '70s, the studio-only ensemble the Now Generation were principally known for issuing albums full of soundalike covers of contemporary hits, although they did put out some original material. Top Nashville session men like Henry Strzelecki, David Briggs, Norbert Putnam, Wayne Moss, Bill Purcell, Kenny Buttrey, 'Pig' Robbins, and Charlie McCoy were among the musicians who played on Now Generation releases. Fortunately, this 20-track compilation concentrates on the original material, as much of the CD is taken from their self-titled 1967 debut LP, their only album not to fall into the 'soundalike' bag. (Unfortunately, this otherwise well-annotated anthology fails to note the source of the specific tracks, making it impossible to determine its chronological range or whether anything is taken from non-LP singles or the like.) The highlights -- unavoidably so, when you're dealing with a group that was usually an identikit cover band -- are the eight songs penned by founder Bobby Russell, best known as the songwriter behind hits by Gary Lewis & the Playboys ('Sure Gonna Miss Her'), O.C. Smith ('Little Green Apples'), Bobby Goldsboro ('Honey'), and Vicki Lawrence ('The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia'). 'Highlights' is, of course, a relative term when you're dealing with tracks taken from somewhat exploitative releases, and the Russell tunes on this CD sound a little like demos or knockoffs of '60s formulas. Assuming these songs were released no earlier than 1967, the formulas tapped are a little out of date as well, including the Newbeats (on 'Come on On' and 'This Town'), surf music ('Daytona Darlin',' 'The Whole Summer Through'), Gene Pitney and Roy Orbison ('Wise Like Solomon,' one of the best tracks, and 'Big Windy City'), and the Four Seasons ('Uptown Downtown'). Sometimes the derivations turn into a most curious stew: 'You're Slipping Away from Me' sounds like an unholy mixture of the Righteous Brothers, Dionne Warwick, and Bobby Vee. Fellow Now Generation member Bergen White chips in with another highlight, 'Crawl Along the Sand,' an eerie combination of psychedelia and girl group pop. And if you want the Now Generation's own versions of White's 'Rainy Night in Georgia' (a big hit for Brook Benton) and 'Sure Gonna Miss Her,' they're here too, though they'll in no way displace the supremacy of the more famous hit renditions. Padding out the CD are pretty useless soundalike cover versions of 'Wooly Bully,' 'You Showed Me,' and 'Indian Giver,' as well as some dispensable instrumentals in both the easy listening and organ-and-sax-dominated rock vein. It's a strange compilation on the whole, combining secondary efforts by successful pop songwriters and incidental filler, almost all of which seemed to be intended as budget throwaways rather than serious artistic endeavors. Note that although one-time member Jimmy Buffett is credited with vocal and acoustic guitar, none of his compositional efforts are included on this CD. ~ Richie Unterberger
The British Él Records label, a division of Cherry Red Records, takes advantage of the 50-year copyright limit on recordings in Europe to compile this unauthorized collection of recordings of songs composed or performed by Burt Bacharach in the mid- and late 1950s (that is, up until 1958, the cutoff point for material in the public domain as of 2009). The result is the sort of album that otherwise probably couldn't exist, bringing together out of print material from various record companies on both sides of the Atlantic. Bacharach was in his late twenties at this point, but he was laboring in what might be described as the dying days of Tin Pan Alley or the early days of the Brill Building, depending on one's point of view. It was only toward the end of this period that he began to become successful, ranking (according to chart researcher Joel Whitburn) 12th among songwriters on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1958 as the result of five chart entries, all found here: Marty Robbins' 'The Story of My Life,' Perry Como's 'Magic Moments,' Patti Page's 'Another Time, Another Place,' the Four Coins' 'Wendy Wendy,' and the Five Blobs' 'The Blob.' (The album also includes British singer Michael Holliday's cover of 'The Story of My Life,' which topped the U.K. chart.) As this list suggests, and as the rest of the album bears out, Bacharach, often writing with the man who later became his regular lyric partner, Hal David, but also with others, was getting cuts from some of the top pop singers of the day, also including Gale Storm, Johnny Mathis, and the Four Preps, even when he wasn't actually getting hits. Other quality singers who cut his tunes (and are heard here) include Mel Tormé, Peggy Lee, Jo Stafford, Margaret Whiting, and Joe Williams. Also, a primary source of his assignments was the movies, even if that meant coming up with a cha-cha novelty song like 'The Blob' for the notorious science fiction/horror flick. Although the writing is craftsmanlike and appropriate to the artists performing it, this is not music characteristic of Bacharach's distinctive later style. Even a fan could listen to this album without realizing that the songs were composed by him. But that fan would still probably be happy to possess such a collection of this early, largely obscure material. ~ William Ruhlmann
Reminiscent of Philidelphia soul-harmony groups such as The Delphonics and The Stylistics, 'The Way I See It' is the first album in four years for singer/musician/producer Raphael Saadiq. Saadiq claims to have been inspired by artist such as Gladys Knight, Al Green and The Four Tops, which gives the album a classic soul feel. The neo-soul sound is also explored through a collaboration with British singer Joss Stone, and another collaboration with Jay-Z keeps the album varied.
The 26 tracks on this anthology have two things in common: all were released on Laurie or affiliated labels, and all were co-written or written by Ernie Maresca (who is the featured artist on four of the songs, too). Maresca is most known as the composer or co-composer of Dion's 'Runaround Sue,' 'The Wanderer,' and 'Lovers Who Wander,' as well as for his own 1962 hit 'Shout! Shout! (Knock Yourself Out).' But did his talent merit a sweep through the secondary flops from his pen, some of which didn't come out until the 1980s (though apparently everything here was recorded between the late '50s and early '70s)? To be harsh, no. It is a jumble of largely mediocre, formulaic pop/rock, much of it indebted to the doo wop music of the late '50s and early '60s, even if much of it was actually recorded in the mid- to late '60s. Some of it is worth more than one listen, including the early Dion & the Belmonts singles 'No One Knows' and 'A Lover's Prayer,' though those have long been easily acquired elsewhere. The 1966 Chiffons cuts 'Open Your Eyes (I Will Be There)' and 'Up on the Bridge' show a greater pop-soul sophistication than the other material, though they're not up to the level of that girl group's best hits. Bernadette Carroll's 'Try Your Luck' is not-bad girl group-style pop, and the Four Coins' 'I'll Never Love Again' is decent 1966 harmony pop/rock rather in the style of groups like the Vogues, the Tokens, and Jay & the Americans. Unfortunately, some of the most memorable other cuts stand out for the wrong reasons: the Teardrops' 'Hey Gingerbread' has grating sub-Frankie Valli falsetto vocals, while Maresca's own 1969 single 'The Spirit of Woodstock' is a tribute to the famous rock festival, but with a hamfisted hipness reeking of inauthenticity. Yet it is not as bad as his 1968 45 'What Is a Marine,' in which Maresca answers the question with a spoken monolog against a syrupy orchestral backing. Sample line: 'A marine is a magical creature, you can take him off your mailing list but not out of your heart.' Gads! ~ Richie Unterberger
Busting out of Gary, Indiana in 1968, the Jackson Five became a phenomenally successful crossover group for Motown Records. Their four consecutive Number One records, 'I Want You Back', 'ABC', 'The Love You Save', and 'I'll Be There', are all included here. With matching psychedelic outfits, a compelling blend of commercial soul and funk, and Michael Jackson's heartfelt homage to Jackie Wilson's stylings, they were top sellers throughout the early '70s.This collection covers only the Motown years (a second rebirth as the Jacksons occurred when they switched labels to Epic in 1976), but it's rich in their early brilliance. A shaking cover of the Isley Brothers' hit 'It's Your Thing' shows just how funky the boys can get. The group's many hits, such as 'Mama's Pearl', 'Maybe Tomorrow', and 'Sugar Daddy', produced by Berry Gordy and the four man writing/producing team known as The Corporation, are also featured. The nascent stirrings of Michael's solo career are represented by 'Got to Be There' and 'Rockin' Robin'. Also noteworthy is 1974's 'Dancing Machine', a precursor to the boys' more blatant disco excursions. Jammed with 21 hit songs and 74 minutes of music, THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION is a must-own.
Elvis Presley's first film, LOVE ME TENDER, included music as an afterthought, but music was the priority in his next, LOVING YOU. Four of the seven songs were hits, while 'Mean Woman Blues' has been recorded by Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and many others. '(Let's Have A) Party' at 90 seconds is the shortest single ever to make the charts, a peculiar achievement as Elvis has an additional verse in the film. Fans used to send Elvis Presley teddy bears, hence the song of the same name. Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote one of their finest ballads with 'Loving You', a song comparable to Cole Porter's 'True Love' which, in turn, completed this 8-track, 10-inch album. In the USA, the album was issued in 12-inch format and the four additional tracks, including 'Blueberry Hill', were released on an EP in the UK.
Following his departure from punk-funk outfit Medium Medium, singer Rees Lewis formed C Cat Trance. Noticeably different from Medium Medium in its instrumentation, the group still retained some of the density and intensity of Rees' former group, but went in a different direction. C Cat Trance relied heavily on world-music instrumentation, scales and time signatures to develop their sound. The results are dark and moody, with a little bit of pop sensibility thrown in for good measure. This Cherry Red collection samples songs from their first EP and the four subsequent full-lengths that followed. Also included are five tracks that were designated for another album, but due to the Red Flame imprint folding, they were never issued. For casual fans of Medium Medium and Lewis' canon, it's well worth the price in picking this up and getting C Cat Trance's finest moments on one disc, and for die-hard fans it's worth the price alone for the unreleased tracks that signal a bold new direction the group was to take. ~ Rob Theakston
Johnny Cash is back and better than ever. The legendary Man In Black is now recording for a modern rock label, and is being produced by hard-core rap/rock guru Rick Rubin--and the results are startling. Spare and stripped to the bone, AMERICAN RECORDINGS is Johnny Cash at his artistic zenith. An original acoustic ballad, the opening 'Delia's Gone' is a watershed accomplishment. Wryly capturing the art of the death ballad, it presents a thoroughly textured dramatic piece, both horrifying and humorous. The same can be said for Cash's droll reading of Loudon Wainwright's 'The Man Who Could Not Cry'. An extremely religious man, Johnny includes several songs dealing with themes of redemption, righteousness and spiritual salvation. Sandwiched between those two songs is a character-rich, eclectic collection of material by writers like Leonard Cohen, British rocker/ex-son-in-law Nick Lowe, Tom Waits, death-metal god Glenn Danzig, and Cash himself. With his resounding baritone--which is in the best form of his long career--and restricted guitar technique, Cash is the centrepiece, creating a sound that is uniquely American--proud, solitary, nearly broken, yet defiant. Johnny Cash, alone with a single guitar, is commanding in his dry, unencumbered intensity. AMERICAN RECORDINGS reaffirms his unique musical prowess, and presents his glorious shadowy skills to a new generation.
On paper, a band that attempts to meld the material of Metallica and the Beatles may seem like a one (or perhaps two)-joke proposition. Beatallica, however, transcended the concept by sheer force of dedication and attention to detail, in the process pleasing notoriously fanatical fans of both source groups. MASTERFUL MYSTERY TOUR is even tighter, more creative, and funnier than its predecessors, combining wildly disparate music so seamlessly, it's hard not to see glimpses of art in this incredible display of craftsmanship. 'The Battery of Jamyz and Yoko' hilariously matches one of the Liverpool lads' most freewheeling anthems with one of thrash metal's most intensely heavy classics, while 'Everybody's Got a Ticket to Ride Except Me and My Lightning''s machine-gun riffs reveal an unexpected musical affinity between the Fab Four and the Four Horsemen. Of course, the album wouldn't work if Beatallica didn't nail Metallica's signature sound so darn well: in many cases, singer Michael Tierney almost sounds more like classic James Hetfield than Hetfield himself, and those fans disillusioned with the speed metal pioneers' post AND JUSTICE FOR ALL output will find a lot to like here, regardless of the parody element.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest singles bands of the '80s, the four-disc anthology A Guided Tour of Madness is a chance to hear the U.K.'s biggest-ever Two-Tone band in all their glory, with 70 tracks plucked from their roller coaster, 30-year career. With the exception of 'Sweetest Girl,' 'Sorry,' and 'The Harder They Come,' every one of their 34 singles make the cut, from their 1979 homage to reggae legend Prince Buster, 'The Prince,' to 2009's 'Forever Young' which, compiled in chronological order, allows fans to chart their journey from cheeky teenage 'nutty boys' to elder statesmen of British ska-pop. Of course, their most familiar material, from their sole U.K. chart-topper 'House of Fun' to their cover of Labi Siffre's 'It Must Be Love,' to their biggest U.S. hit, 'Our House,' is likely to inspire mass singalongs from casual fans. But as its lengthy track list suggests, this comprehensive collection also showcases what else they had to offer. Indeed, the band might not have looked as though they were taking themselves too seriously, but with songs which sensitively tackled issues such as the IRA ('Michael Caine'), the Falklands War ('Blue Skinned Beast'), and immigration ('Prospects'), they offered a lot more substance than they were given credit for, while 1999 comeback single 'Lovestruck' (their first Top Ten hit in 16 years), their 2000s covers of the Kinks' 'Lola' and the Supremes' 'You Keep Me Hanging On,' and the four tracks from 2009's well-received The Liberty of Norton Folgate prove that the band haven't been resting on their laurels. While most Madness fans will already own the majority of tracks here, there are also a few obscurities thrown into the mix, from early B-sides such as 'All I Knew' and 'Mistakes' (apparently the first song the band ever wrote) to 'Sarah's Song,' a number from their Our House musical, and the previously unreleased 'Le Grand Pantalon,' and the playful, Gallic waltz-tinged rendition of their signature hit 'Baggy Trousers,' which shows their tongue-in-cheek humor remains firmly intact. A cut above most hastily assembled retrospectives, A Guided Tour of Madness is a cleverly selected affair which should satisfy anyone wishing to investigate more than their more ubiquitous commercial hits. ~ Jon O'Brien

A Communication Universe: Manifestations of Meaning, Stagings of Significance presents a new theoretical understanding of communication. Igor E. Klyukanov conceptualizes the process of communication in terms of space and time, i.e., as a continuous process of meaningful spatiotemporal transformation. He goes on to examine four fundamental transformations and the four theoretical perspectives on the nature of communication. From the first perspective communication appears to be 'pure space,' then time comes into play more and more actively, and from the fourth perspective communication appears to be 'pure time.' Following the fourth transformation communication is seen as returning back to the first stage where it again appears as 'pure space;' however, now its reality contains all meanings created in the process of the previous transformations. Based on these four transformations, the process of communication is understood as a universe, meaning 'whole,' 'entire,' 'turned into one.'
A tribute to the minimalist genius of the artist in exile who courted nothingness in his writing: Samuel Beckett. It celebrates Beckett's linguistic flair and the thrust of his stylistic terseness, and declares her love for his unrivalled expression of the meaningless 'precious little' of life, its unfathomable banality ending in chaos and death.

This volume analyzes the Nordic and Baltic states' relationship with the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP). Clive Archer presents a general background to the European Union's ESDP, the strategic situation of Northern Europe, the main security and defence policy issues faced by the states there, as well as outlining the main theoretical considerations concerning security in the region. Key chapters cover the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and the four Nordic states of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The selected contributors provide an analysis of the region as seen from Brussels and of the practical and theoretical issues arising from the study. This new text tackles an aspect of the ESDP that has previously received little attention, and reinvigorates old ground, blending together analytical, theoretical and policy-relevant approaches. New Security Issues in Northern Europe will be a welcome addition to all those with an interest in security studies, European politics and international relations.

This book identifies what is meant by sati (smrti), usually translated as 'mindfulness', in early Buddhism, and examines its soteriological functions and its central role in the early Buddhist practice and philosophy. Using textual analysis and criticism, it takes new approaches to the subject through a comparative study of Buddhist texts in Pali, Chinese and Sanskrit. It also furnishes new perspectives on the ancient teaching by applying the findings in modern psychology. In contemporary Buddhism, the practice of mindfulness is zealously advocated by the Theravada tradition, which is the only early Buddhist school that still exists today. Through detailed analysis of Theravada's Pali Canon and the four Chinese Agamas - which correspond to the four main Nikayas in Pali and belong to some early schools that no longer exist - this book shows that mindfulness is not only limited to the role as a method of insight (vipassana) meditation, as presented by many Theravada advocates, but it also has a key role in serenity (samatha) meditation. It elucidates how mindfulness functions in the path to liberation from a psychological perspective, that is, how it helps to achieve an optimal cognitive capability and emotional state, and thereby enables one to attain the ultimate religious goal. Furthermore, the author argues that the well-known formula of ekaayano maggo, which is often interpreted as 'the only way', implies that the four satipa.t.thaanas (establishments of mindfulness) constitute a comprehensive path to liberation, and refer to the same as kaayagataa sati, which has long been understood as 'mindfulness of the body' by the tradition. The analysis shows that kaayagataa sati and the four satipa.t.thaanas are two different ways of formulating the teaching on mindfulness according to different schemes of classification of phenomena.
